When Nature Chooses a Favorite

Late this spring, by pure coincidence, we received a truly special group of captive-bred blue Island Pit Vipers from a respected breeder.
The moment the box opened—OHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
That blue was unreal. Ethereal. Almost impossible to believe with the naked eye.

Nature has a habit of reserving its most extravagant colors for the species it favors most.

The native homeland of the Island Pit Viper is the Komodo National Park—a name best known to the world for its most famous resident, the Komodo dragon. But beyond that iconic giant, the park is home to countless rare, mysterious, and breathtaking endemic species. Not long after these vipers arrived, the idea naturally took shape:

Dusk, Dawn, and the Layers of the Wild

For this set, the overall base tone was intentionally kept dark.

In the wild, the most active and revealing moments of animal behavior happen during dawn and dusk. Many nocturnal species can only be found deep at night, under harsh flashlights, after long searches through dense forest. And yet, against these dim environments, life flourishes in the most vivid and striking colors.

This is also our first time experimenting with a large horizontal color-block layout, representing the natural vertical layers of vegetation—from tree canopies to the forest floor.

However, unlike industrial or highly regimented designs, we didn’t want the composition to feel overly mechanical. So instead of rigid, uniform stripes, the color divisions intentionally break and stagger across function keys, numbers, and symbols—allowing the layout to feel organic, uneven, and alive.

Creatures of Komodo

Most of the novelty keycaps draw directly from endemic species of the region:

• The massive, drooling Komodo dragon

• The Island Pit Viper

• Tokay geckos

• Tarsiers with their unmistakable eyes

A small number of elements reference species that, through human cultivation or domestication, have spread widely across Southeast Asia.

One key detail deserves special mention.

In recent years, climate change has brought severe droughts to the park, leading to food shortages. Digging artificial water reservoirs for Komodo dragons and supplementary feeding with goats has become routine conservation work.

The R4 novelty featuring a leftover goat skull is not meant to shock—it stands as a quiet record and tribute to the ongoing efforts of ecological protection.

With or Without Legends

KOMODO is available in both legend and non-legend versions.

As Komodo National Park lies within the Lesser Sunda Islands, we chose to use modern Sundanese script from Indonesia for the legends. Whether you prefer a clean, minimal look or culturally rooted typography, you’re free to choose the version that speaks to you.
